Hi. Im from Huntingdon and im fairly new to cichlid husbandry, and am overwhelmingly excited to embrace as much info and knowledge i can contract from experienced users in my area, i currently have a juvenile oscar, tank is not a worry he is only 5 and half inches and is moving to a 55 gallon in a month or 6 weeks, he's joined with his dither fish (4 black skirt tetras) i also have a 30 gallon its home to a pair of juvenile convicts and used as a growout for a very small 1.5 inch jack dempsey who will be re-established into a larger tank when he is around 4 or 5 in. I would love some feedback and all the help I can get and pass on, thank you in advanced. there are not many aquarist in my area I have no one to associate with in this hobby. Im also huge into diy and one day wish to build aquariums and sell them

Welcome, drinkardj. I think you'll find the best substrate depends on what species of fish you have, their size and the purpose of that particular tank.

Welcome, Drinkardj! For amrican cichlids, I use whatever gravel suits the mood but mixing in a buffering substrate (I use crushed coral or shell or limestone decorations to prevent PH crashing to critical levels if a water change is skipped or overpopulation is happening. For africans, I use straight coral, dolomite or shell to keep the water over 7.0 even if the keeper is lazy. I avoid driftwood for africans for the same reason. Your Tetras will need their running shoes eventually... Remember everyone's advice is almost always their best intentions, their personal experience and what works for them, your mileage may vary! Jump in, there are no silly questions
