Are Turts illegal in TN? I know about the 4 inch law that was established back in the 1970-80's but I was reading Tn's state laws on the web and it wasn't very clear as to their legal status as pets.
There are no petstores in TN that sell them but if you go to KY or AL, you will see them in stores.

Good question, I have 2.... We got ours to keep them from being ran over. We have had one for almost 4 years and the other about 2 and a half. We tried to keep them out of the road but both refused to stay away. We even placed them on the side they were facing and they wanted to stay in the road (I guess for heat) They would have gotten hit. Ours love tomatoes and watermelon rinds. Pet stores here sell turtle food, but ours will not eat it.

The TWRA is pretty clear, its a no-no. www.tennessee.gov/twra/faqmain.html(ctrl + f for turtles to see paragraph about it.) Interestingly you can harvest turtles to eat, but can't keep them as pets.

Thanks nebelhund. I never seen that paragraph, I was reading what was in the actual TN law books which aren't as easy to understand. Turtle soup anyone?!

So you CAN keep a turtle and if anyone says you can't have it you can say you plan to eat it later and there's nothing they can do! Just don't ever get around to eating it.

You just can't sell them. Unless its endangered no one will kick down your door looking. And I love turtle soup as well, they serve it at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

I haven't had a turtle for a pet but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to eat turtle if I did. Since starting to keep cichlids I'm not happy seeing tilapia around places.

Turtle is actually very good. And to be honest, fish is my favorite meat and also one of the healthiest meats. Keeping fish for 7+ years really hasn't phased me when it comes to a good meal.

I have that covered: I'll just never get attached to a haddock or a pollock(fish) or a shrimp(even though I considered that one!)

Interestingly, I'd been looking for a box turtle for a while. I found a baby today on a company picnic. I'll take some pictures, Its maybe 1.25" long.
Reading up on them it looks like it will like some of the worms and such I get for my fish.
Um, of course, I'm just raising it so I can eat it. According to Tennessee laws discussed above.

Nebelhund, ours eat tomatoes, apples, and watermelon rinds best. They "ran" from worms... They will tolerate salad mix but its by far not their fav selection. They seem to prefer veggies and fruits that are crisp., but NOT chilled or refridgerated! We let ours swim in the bath tub every few days to keep them from drying out too much. We also allow them to run around in the front yard ( they became a fetching game in the back... Dumb dog!). Fair warning... they pee on you if they are the least bit scared or just do not want to be held.

Good info and I appreciate it.
From what I've read the smaller they are they more insects they eat. They branch out more the older they are in terms of what they like.
I put some small meal worms in with it last night and they were all gone this morning. He is just in a big flat tupperware container(no cover). I used moistened potting soil and he dug in to it in just a few minutes. I need to find a little lid for a pool for it.
Not sure what long term plans are for it.
