Hi everyone. I'm retired and getting back into the hobby after 30 years. I'm building a stand for a 55 gal and taking it slow since so much has changed in the hobby in that time. I'm considering angels, rainbows, or firemouths. I had good success with angels and kribs previously, but don't know if angels will do well in our water which is reported to be ph 7.5-7.9 and 4-8 dh. I'm open for advice and suggestions on most anything!

Hi Davet! Welcome! Several of us keep angels without altering the water at all. They seem to like clean water more than a certain ph or hardness, so you'll be fine. Happy to hear you're back in the hobby and hopefully enjoying your retirement!

Hello davet. Glad to have ya ! Retired and into the fish hobby. Now isn't that just a grand duo !!! You need to check your ph and dh and not take someone else's word on it. That said, Angel is correct that not many folks alter the water and we have lots of different kinds of Cichlids that do well with many of our members. Welcome; and we hope to hear from you on the forum, and at the next swap meet, which is being discussed at the present time. Watch the forum for upcoming details and plans. Rick

Thanks Angel and Rick. As far as the water chemistry, I pulled those numbers off the water company's website and will check the parameters before I settle on which species. I'm not intending to try to alter the water. We get up to Nashville fairly often for shopping and music (I'm also an amateur musician), so a swap meet would be a possibility.

Our water here is 7.2 out of the tap and hard as anything. The angels in my tanks do fine. I think you can do them ok. Hope to meet you soon!

One big thing to remember--in harder water, high ph situations, spikes in the cycle become more deadly. So cycle thoroughly, and change water often.

My water is also straight from the tap @ 7.2 and about 17 gh. I have angels and several other cichlids, plec's, etc. and they all do well. Good luck and we'll talk to ya via the forum.

Welcome Davet. I'm presently doing some research on rainbow fish and am seriously considering dedicating a 55 or 75 gallon tank to them. If you go the rainbow route, maybe we can compare notes. My biggest question right now is where to find quality rainbows.

Just joined the forum, and wanted to say hi. Mostly keep various tropicals. Have a 55, 46 bow, and 30 cube at the moment. Going to set up a 20 for swordtail fry this weekend. Anyway, I'm in the Cookeville area.
