So I've been struggling with my first tank of tropheus(not the ones I got from you, Joe) and even after treating with Clout twice I was still having deaths. Today we tore the tank down thinking there has to be something in the substrate that's not getting killed. Well we found something in the substrate alright! There was a penny in there! Would that be an issue? Also, and I'm sure this would be, in the filter were tubular things that are like when mosquitos and/or midges lay eggs. If there were larvae in the tank my trophs were getting meat they shouldn't have. I think I may have had two deadly things going on there. What does anyone else think?

Tina,
I think you have found a BIG problem, Copper in the tank. Copper kills fish. I don't remember what is in clout but you have mixed it with copper. I would think the larvae would be a secondary problem, but the copper would be my number one choice of killing your fish. It maybe too late to save them, but one can hope for the best.
Good catch Joe

This was a beautiful tank when I picked it up and I didn't want to disturb the biological so I never stripped it all out . Now I wish I had. The fish are moved to a different tank hopefully at least some of them will live. But the water--I wonder if I shouldn't have kept them in their same water then. I took water from the tank they were in and made the new tank. Crap! I have quite a mess.

Yes, you need to do 100% new water, the copper is in the water.

I can't figure out how someone could be so stupid as to put a penny in a fish tank!

That stinks angel! Sorry you lost some fish but glad you found the problem. No telling how it got in there. Could have just been dropped or a kid could have pitched it in. It would definately be enough to make any delicate fish sick.

It's strange. That tank was way too sparkly and he said he never did water changes or anything. Now that I look back I should have known something was up. The sand was dirty and smelly. The filter was fairly clean. The sides of the tank were sparkling the decorations had no slime on them at all. Just too many things tidy for the sand to be so smelly. And the smell of the dirty money was there I just never put it together--and I used to work in a bank. You'd think it would have stuck right out at me. How we get busy and forget.

Well now we know why the treatments weren't working! I just am sick that I had to lose fish, and that it might have poisoned the rest of them too. I have them all in new water now. Let's hope!

How are the fish doing angel? Were you able to save the rest of them?

No more deaths so far. But they didn't want to eat this morning.
