Just curious what particular brands of sponge filters everyone likes and the cheapest place to get em? I'm looking for one for a 10 gal and a 30 gal tank.
And what brand of air pump do you guys suggest? I have a few different brands but mine are old and very loud.

I think mine are hydro-sponge. I have used poret foam, but I ended up selling it all.

I use a linear piston air pump, which can run about 30 tanks and it is pretty quiet. They make them that can run over 100. If you are ever thinking of expanding I would look at one of them. They can run as few as 12, which if you put a couple per tank you would only be running 6 tanks. It only uses 30 something watts so you could filter up to 30 tanks on 30 watts. I like these because they give you flexibility to expand. All you do is drill a brass fitting into a pvc and away you go. I haven't used a normal air pump so I can't help you there.

I have a piston air that runs over 100 sponges. I use the Hydro with some filter boxes. I may be selling the set up.

Big Al's has the lustar hydro-sponges of all different sizes. The one below is suitable for a 10 gallon. You'll see a list on the page for bigger ones suitable for up to 125 gallons. They range from $6.99 to $10.99. If you haven't had dealings with Big Al's, I give them my highest recommendation. Prices are good, and their service has been perfect every time I've used them. Top notch company. www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp19170/si1379356/cl0/lustarhydrospongefilter1As for a quiet air pump, I'd like to know of one also. I'm using a Whisper 30-60 with double outlets to run a bubble wand in one of my tanks, and it's noisy. I'm using a Profile 1000 to run a small sponge filter in a 29 gallon, and it's also pretty noisy. Both came with some used tanks I bought, so I really can't complain. When I get things organized later this summer, I'm seriously going to look into a system like Jon and Reagan are using.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I done a quick google search on the piston pumps and the ones I seen ranged from $150-400!!! I'm sure they work wonders but I only need something for two tanks ATM. And I only have 5 tanks total setup right now, anymore and my old house may not be so forgiving.
Mike, thanks for the link.
Reagan, send me a message when you decide to get rid of your setup. I might be interested in buying one used rather than new.

For what you pay for two of those sponge filters. You make about ten of them yourself.

We'd all like to see the method for making them if you don't mind. Could you post them here?
