Guilty as charged. I'm bad about impulsive spending and, in turn, have given about $100 to MafiaWars. I also used the Netflix promo to renew my subsription there.
Now that I've realized that it's a bottomless money pit, I resist the urge to pay. Luckily Gmail has caught most of the spam that comes from giving Zygna my email addy. No more "free" godfather points" for me now!
Thanks for posting that article, angel! Some may not have been aware of these games selling users' info.

I wanted to play one of the games at one point til it asked for information I didn't think had anything to do with the game. Gave up at that point. But it just seemed so unreal that all of my contacts would have been playing them and put in all the information yet no one had said don't do it it's asking for too much. Maybe that's what they count on--you trust your friends and your friends are doing it so you do it and then your other friends trust you and they do it, etc.

One thing I did learn from my time working in banking is there are MANY ways to get your personal information and many more ways to use it. Guard it like a hawk.

Agreed. BillMeLater has even made it easier to get credit on someone else's dime. You just need their name, address, and last 4 of their SSN.
When shopping online, I always make sure checkout is secure (look for "https" at the beginning of the web address and only buy from trusted companies. If it looks fishy (hehe), go somewhere else.

Being an IT guy helps too.
