This probably isn't the place to put it, but I just didn't really know where. All of a sudden I had a dead red fin borleyi. He's been here for 5 months or so, wasn't old, was the subdominant male, and didn't look bloated or injured to me. He just turned up dead, and all his scales were white. His mouth was wide open too. He seemed fine this morning. Any ideas what else could have killed him? I did have an air pump go out, but have the tank overfiltered, and no one seems distressed really. Could he have died because the amount of air changed in the last couple of days?

IMO, if it was oxygen related the fish and the rest of the fish in the tank would be at the surface gasping for air.
Did you do a water change or have your water parameters changed ?
That would be where I would start. If everything looks OK sometimes fish just die.

Hi Joe, No water change. That's today's task. Always on Sunday. I haven't tested the parameters yet. That tank's been so stable for so long I don't even think about it. I'll do that. Maybe he did just die--no one else is bothered in the slightest. It bugs me. Tina

Well my nitrates are up. But I was cleaning the sides of the tank last night they were looking kinda filmy, and the back had some algae. I think I do have a tendency to overfeed sometimes. Still nitrates in themselves shouldn't kill a fish, right? Just make them less than comfortable. Maybe he had a heart attack from the other boys chasing him?

What did the nitrates test at? It might not be the main cause of death, but it could have stressed him enough to kill him.

They were 60. I'm doing tank maintenance now. Hopefully that'll help.

Still got the nitrates going on. But I did go to PetSmart today and get a great new pump. It's blowing the doors off the airstones. The fish look stress-free. Will wait two days and change water again I guess.
