Ok, this project is far from me even beginning but I made a quick sketch of what i would like it to look like. It will be a few more weeks before this begins. I'm waiting on my contractor to put my new roof on my house before I start this. Please suggest anything, this is still in the design stages. Oh, and where it says "Indoor plants", I plan on using some type of grass or maybe a vine.

It looks good. Will the plants be in pots around the outside or will you build a planter around it?

The green area you see around the the tank will be 6" wide and about 5-6" deep. I will line the area with either a hard type of plastic or use some type of sealant/foam thats water proof and then fill the green area with about 4" of potting soil. Thats the plan anyway, it my change slightly. My wife suggested using some fake moss. I want to do something different with the canopy but I'm at a loss for trying to design something "different" and unique.

Looks like a great start. These are my suggestions, they are based on what I like. You might like something different, it is your tank so go with what you think will make you the happiest. I personally have never been a fan of stands larger then the tanks. I think it makes the take look smaller and takes slightly away from the overall look. I know you said you wanted a stand that would be bigger so you could accomidate a 30" wide tank someday. But when you get that tank you will still need a stand for your 180g then. Mysuggestion would be to build it to fit the 180g now perfectly and deal with another stand down the road if you buy a bigger tank. Either way you would need another stand. However if you prefer the overhang that is your choice. It's just my opinion. Another suggetion is the 2 smaller tanks underneath. I have always found other smaller tanks underneath show tanks destracting. What do you want the 2 smaller tank for? Will they be fry, food, etc? I think it would look nicer with them hidden, plus you are going to need a good amount of your underneath for your sump. The bigger the sump the better. One other thing to consider is how is your sump going to work. If you have plants for denitrification or want anything that will produce any light under there the frosted glass will be a bad idea. And don't forget were your overflow holes go when bracing the stand. Just some things to think about. Your fancy design software makes me sick. You should see my pathetic scribblings from some of my builds . I feel vastly inferior!!!

Thanks JD! I need some constructive criticism. Cause sometimes we overlook things when we are planning or building something. My idea to build the stand large enough to accommodate a 30" was because I don't have the room for a 24" and a 30" in my current house. The 20gal tanks were just a thought, I would only use them for fry or food for any monsters i might put in the 180. I just threw that in the drawing to make it look fancy I still haven't decided on my sump size yet, so that will be a big factor for anything else going underneath the stand. No plants in the sump!!! I can't get the ones in my actual fish tank to live, LOL. I'm open to more suggestions. I will fool around with more designs/ideas and post them here and try to get opinions on what you guys think look the best.

still planning, I'm just gonna take my time with this tank and do it right and how I want it the first time. I'm about to put a new metal roof on my house so I've been tied up with that trying to get quotes from different companies and as soon as the roofers are finished I'm gonna finish my landscaping around the house. I'm afraid this stand project will be a minute until I get these other tasks taken care of. Though it will give me some time to decide exactly how I want it to look and of course a stock list for the tank. I keep jumping back and fourth between PREDATOR or COMMUNITY tank, ahh the decisions

Don't know if this would work, but what about twin pseudo sumps AKA planted tanks with small schools or small eartheater fry grow out in the 20g's and then the big tank up top. Sounds like it will be great whatever you do. Post us plenty of pics of the process and then the finished product.

My personal vote is umbee pair!!!!!!!!!! ;D Something different. I have always raised SA Cichlids and rarely ventured into the unknown except for your ocassional "docile" oddball fish. I've been reading up on Payara, large puffer fish(Fahaka), Pirahnna, etc. Not as a community tank that is. I would love to get a Tigrinus, but $150 for a 6-8". I'm still undecided, an Umbee pair would be sweet. Really a pair of anything unique; to me, breeding anything in captivity is a reward considering the time we spend keeping our water in check.

I think a pair of something large and a cat will work. Rich at infinate aquatics was selling small tigs for $50 a few months back.
