Does anyone know why when walking into a fish store there are often fish with bellies so far sunken in it looks like they're about to die? Do they get fed?

Angel, Patty said they do not feed them very well. It cuts down on tank maintence. Also they think they will be fed and come to the front of tank so people will buy them. Please understand these people are in the business of selling fish. They for the most part are not fish keepers.

It hurts to see them that way, and it makes me angry too. And want to bring in a pocketful of food when I go in! I'm telling you these fish are like starving dogs and horses you see on the ASPCA shows! It's enough to make a person cry. And it does.

Well Angel, there seems to be no laws that regulate treatment of aquatic creatures. Most people do not even know the proper most humane way to put down a fish. You put them in enough water that they can float right side up. Put them in a freezer and they will go to sleep when the temp drops. It does not hurt them.

I think that the ASPCA or some organization should be made aware of this and that we fish lovers don't think it's right. They would feel the pain of starvation and poor water conditions too--I was in WalMart two days ago again and this time the water was so full of green algae you couldn't see the cichlids in their tanks. Dead ones floating and everything! How unhealthy for them.

I have a petco where I live that always has dead fish in the tank. The fish that are alive are in horrible condition. I have called corporate on them, but nothing has changed.

And of course the local humane societies never confiscate fish for cruelty. It really disgusts me!

Its sad beacuse most people think fish are just fish. At my house, they become part of te family.

You can't tell my fish they're not part of the family! They insist on my attention. And they're all timid around new people, but showoffs for me. With just that much interaction we know they do have at least some semblence of feelings, in addition to being in horrible conditions in so many places they'd know they're neglected and that bothers me.

I had an Oscar a few years back that would swim through your hand like a cat does. Gorgeous fish with an amazing personality.

Mine know me too--and they know how to give me the excited look and swim extra cute in front of me. And they see me coming out of the bedroom in the morning and rush to the end of the tank that is facing the hall. Smart little cuties!
