I have no experience with black sand. If you do decide to go with regular sand, though, I'd highly recommend pool filter sand. It takes next to no cleaning when you set up the tank. By the way, 75 is my biggest tank, and I love it. I've been hankering for a 125 for a while, though.

You can get it at big ALS online but after shipping it is the same as petsmart.

the best black sand wish for africans is actually not sand, Its 3M color Quartz. (sold by pool suppy chains) it comes in various grades and will last forever and never looses its color. also is really easy to clean and fairly cheap. CON is its next to impossible to find In Tennessee. So good luck.
next would be either the caribsea black sand or the black eco-complete. (if growing anything I would choose this)
last is Black diamond sand blasting sand. its made from coal slag so its inert and wont change water chemistry(its a hassle to rinse however -like rinsing play sand) There is also Black Beauty but this is iron slag and I would avoid it because of this.
For white sand, Pool filter sand is the way to go.
