I got tired of paying PetSmart way too much for fish food every week so ordered a 5 lb bucket of Omega One Cichlid Flakes. How long will they keep in the bucket? Do I need to refrigerate or freeze any?

Yes, take out only what you can use in a month and freeze the rest. I will be making some bulk orders on frozen food soon. I also freeze my medicated (metro) flakes

I do the same. My freezer downstairs is full of fish food. Several 5 lb. buckets in there!

When I looked at what I was spending in fish food it was too much to ignore. $17 and change for 5.2 oz that lasts 2 weeks at most or $68 including shipping for 5 lbs. I'm saving a LOT doing it this way. I've accumulated a lot of fish. So I can just put the entire bucket in the freezer? What about thawing? Does it thaw dry and ready to use? I need to be saving on frozen foods too. Those packages in the pet store add up!

I order Aquadine. It's about $42 for 3 pounds and lasts a long time, and can be frozen as well.

Put the tub in the freezer. I don't thaw mine out. I will be getting mysis shrimp, krill, and silversides. I will also make some homemade veggie/shrimp recipe.

I keep the bulk food frozen in the freezer and use smaller containers that I refill from the bulk supply. That way I'm not opening and closing my freezer several times a day when I have fry to feed. If I have run out of the warm/thawed food and need to feed my fish I just throw the food in frozen and it doesn't seem to slow my fish down at all to eat it cold.

I buy NLS in 5 lb buckets but I don't freeze it. The tub has a vacuum seal lid and always smells fresh when I open it.

I don't freeze my food either and it always seems to be fine as long as I keep the bag closed tightly with a rubber band around it, etc.

A light came on. I have fish food that I have no idea how old it is. I bought it in a bulk buy from someone getting out of fish. The fish won't eat it. I'm thinking now it's stale and I should pitch it all instead of trying to trick them into it! Wardley's pellets in particular. Got them from two different people but I know the one sat here 3 yrs. Never imagined they may have gotten stale. Fish won't touch them and I had to wonder how they were the only fish food the guy had for his jacks and oscars. Might be just nasty tasting now!

I'm a bonehead. I never thought about buying food in bulk. I don't go through it super fast but I'm sure I will as I keep adding tanks. Good thread.

Might be the brand too. None of my fish will touch Wardley brand foods, fresh off the shelf!

Mine all love Omega One. And Jon's green pellets go over well with most of them. Other than that I have no idea what's any good.

Right now I am using O.S.I. Cichlid Premier small floating pellets. We paid like 7.99 for 8.8 ounces. The Oscar LOVES it! He started showing off when I pulled the bag out to look at the name. With just the one tank it would take forever to use a large amount but you are definately saving a ton. Jon, how much do you charge for your food counting shipping?
