Today I purchased a new 75 gallon tank to replace my current 55gal. I am going to be placing my 75g on the same stand and in the same spot. What is the best way to move my 55g off of my stand and replace it with the new 75g with the least amount of stress on the fish?

Well, we just moved a bunch of ours, and it went ok. You can drain the water down to an amount you can lift the tank off, then fill the other one with water--even water from the 55 if you can save some of it. Then put in the decorations they're used to and net them and put them in the 75. You'll need someone helping you lift the tank off the stand, and grip it by the bottom of course so you don't put any extra stress on the glass or the frame. Put it down right in front of the stand. Not much shaking them around that way. Anyone else?

Well depending on the fish, you could place them in a temporary holding tank/bucket with an airstone providing oxygen and they should be fine while you switch tanks. Just use the water from the existing tank so that they are used to its properties. You can opt to remove the gravel - or most of it - especially if you have a lot of gravel. But if you've only got say a half inch of gravel, you and one other person should be good to move it. Am I just tired and not thinking straight, or is a 75 too wide for a 55 stand?

I never did know how that works. I've seen it said before that a 75 fits a 55 stand but never could work out how.

A 75 will not fit on a 55 stand. A 55 is 13" wide, a 75 is 18" wide. If the 55 is on a 75 stand somehow, that would work, but I wouldn't put a wide tank on a too small stand. Maybe it's on a dresser or something?
I'd move the fish to a tub...you don't want to move an aquarium with water in it...too much stress on the tank.

Maybe their original tank was for a 75? Or maybe it's an odd dimension 75, sort of a 55 tall. I know they make 65's with the same footprint as a 55, just taller.
I move fish ALL THE TIME. I just put them in buckets with the tank water they came out of. No airstones or heaters. It never takes me that long, although I usually have the new tank set up before taking the old one down. One benefit of MTS(multiple tank syndrome).

Heh, It is a 55g stand, and yes the tank is about 5" to big for it. I will be modifying the stand by putting a larger surface to fit the 75g.

I thought I was right about the dimensions. I have a 65 which is just a taller 55 and it works on a 55 stand. The 75 will indeed be too wide to fit a 55 stand. And yes, you'll definitely want to take at least 90-95 percent of the water about before you move it.
