Ok so i have been reasearching these type of lake tanganyika fish but, i was wanting some advice someone who might have kept them longer than i have. For the past year i kept at least one. But i was wanting to convert my 55 gallon tank into a perfect( as close i as can get it) Habitat for them but everything i read never mentions any plants. I really would like to know what kind of plants, possibly a good fish to clean up food, and possibly a good way to have a series of caves in the background. I am lost really. I want to have caves in the background, i found a website on how to do it. It told me to use lava rock. I am not sure if lava rock will work. I guess i just need some help setting up the tank.

Jody, Here is a link that talks lightly about plants in a high PH tank; www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/plants_101.phpUnfortunately, we will all have to wait for Plants 102 by this author. As for a "clean up" fish, I would recommend synodontis petricola or a synodontis multipunctatus.

Sometimes java fern and moss work alright. You will want a low light plant. They are fine when small, but become highly aggressive as they age. I would suggest a species tank, but you can do more research and come to your own conclusion.

They would have to be equally as aggressive.
