i just receieved my ChlorAm-X what do i use to measure?? is there anything i can get around the house to use ? 1 oz. treats 235 gallons. A scoop comes with the ChlorAm-X, dig down to find it if you don't see it. I weighed the scoop empty, then full on a postal scale to figure out my dosages. However, I'm using it on large tanks so using the scoop works fine. For smaller tanks I either guess, or use a liquid treatment like Amquel or equivalent, which is usually 1 drop per gallon. The cheapest liquid treatment I've found is: www.petsolutions.com/Petsolutions-Complete-Water-Conditioner+I12517662+C10395.aspx

sodium thiosulfate - will not remove ammonia from your water so, if your water company is using chloramines you will only remove chlorine and release ammonia into the water column, which could be deadly to your fish depending on the amount of the water change. At minimum your will stress the fish if this occurs.
just something to consider

Thanks Joe. I did read that and haven't used it as of yet. I need to find out from the water company first. I've had this stuff for months! But how do I know if there are any heavy metals in the water that need removed? It probably won't do that either.

Unless you are on well water, your water co. should send you a bulletin annually that tells you what is in the water (if you called them, they could probably re-send you one). We don't have chloramines but we do have a small level of nitrates, for example. I've thought about switching to the powder but liquid just seems easier. Plus 2 liters of prime is only about $35 and it lasts a looooooong time.

Heavy metals can be detected using a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter. I don't know what chemicals to use to reduce them as I use a filtering system that removes sediment and two types of carbons.

When we bought out a breeder she then brought out this bucket of crystals . She used it to dechlor her ponds. She had many. She sold it to me for $15 and said it would last a lifetime but I've never been brave enough to use it so I suppose that's true it will last a lifetime!
