I guess my husband and I are sort of equal partners in the fish hobby...we decided together to get our first tank, both do research on fish independently. I couldn't handle it if he had an expensive hobby I wasn't interested in, and probably vice versa.
I think it might be harder for a woman to have a hobby like fishkeeping...it takes up space in the house (or in a garage, separate from the family), and can cost a lot, too. Women have a lot of demands on their time at home, especially if they have children, that would take away from fish keeping. I was friends for awhile with a lady that kept guppies and a few other fish. But she was always getting criticism from her husband for spending so much time/money on the tanks. My husband and I both work and don't have kids so we can put in a lot of time and effort on our tanks. My husband does a lot of the maintenance, though.
I am an engineer (computer/electrical) so while I don't mind tinkering with things, I prefer things that work and look nice. My husband has 2 left hands when it comes to fixing things, lol.
