Last night, I added an Emperor 400 to the 65 gallon tank that it getting ready to be my discus tank (it also has an XP3 canister). Despite my efforts, the impeller assembly and housing are making quite a bit of vibration/rattling noise. Even though I am a big fan of the Emperor filters, they are pretty notorious for this problem. My older ones come and go with this problem, but for the most part are quiet, especially after settling in and getting a little "gunk" build up on the inner workings. Also, the older models I have feature the little vertical in/out volume lever which always makes the filters quieter when the lever is in the "up" position. This new Emperor does not have that lever at all. So I am hoping this isn't as quiet as this filter ever gets. I can live with it, it's not buzz saw-loud or anything, but it's certainly giving off more noise than I want.

Still have quite a bit of noise after a week of operation on this Emperor 400. It's definitely impeller/housing noise. When I push down or back on the intake tube that curves down toward the impeller, it goes pretty quite, but as soon as I let go, the rattle returns. Any thoughts? I still expect it to quieten with time, but would love it to be sooner!

Thanks, I may do that. It seems to be a little better than it was. I may just order a new impeller housing part and keep this one for a back up down the line. Throw it in my bins of extra parts that I'll never use! Haha.

Lol! I hear you on the spare parts. I bought a HOT Mag 250 w/ Biowheel without knowing that it wouldn't fit my 26 bowfront. There's a plastic brace right in the middle top that is too wide to add the Biowheel. That's still in the box and is being used as spare parts for my current HOT 250.
I use the Penguin with just filter floss on the cartridges (ripped off the original foam and dumped the carbon) and for the Biowheel. Got some tannins from some driftwood that I rushed into the tank that I'm about to use a carbon cartridge to get rid of. The fish are loving the lower pH (7.2 after a week), but looking at a greenish-brown tank is a little bit of an eyesore.
I just need to get off my butt and start changing water! Then add a regular Penguin filter cartridge to help remove the brown. ;D
You also said that when you push backwards on the intake hose, the noise lessens. Have you checked that it's installed correctly and the filter housing is level?

Yeah, I've had it out of there and back in two different times. I'm going to try one more time before taking the next step. The only thing I haven't done is take the filter completely off the tank and see if that makes any difference in any way. That'll be Tuesday's project hopefully. LOL.
