We all hate to lose fish, but it's even worse when you do something stupid to cause their demise. Well, count me guilty as charged. I woke up yesterday to find almost half the fish in my juvenile Tang tank were dead, and others were hanging by a thread. It didn't take long to discover the problem. I had put an untested, used250 watt heater in the 55 gallon tank, and it obviously malfunctioned and turned the tank into bath water. I don't have a thermometer on it, but it was very warm to the touch. I immediately did a 50 percent water change with cool water and managed to save what was left. I lost all four of my beautiful Leleupi, three of the four gold head comps, one of the four white calvus and my only cylindricus, which was one of my favorites. I first noticed the problem when I noticed my orange scribble floundering near the top of the tank, barely able to swim and so weak he was getting stuck to the filter intake. Amazingly, the cool water did the trick and he seems to be OK today. Anyway, at least my carelessness didn't kill them all. I still have four peacocks, three calvus, one gold head comp, the orange scribble and a polystigma that didn't miss a beat. He was patrolling around looking for food in the midst of all the carnage. Makes you wanna cry, though.

Tina, the really dumb thing is I didn't even need the heater. Since I moved my mom in to look after her, she keeps the house like a hothouse. I just put the heater in because I thought it might help moderate temperatures during water changes. Duh.

A tough lesson to have, but we all do things. Grab some more fish and move on. They help fill the void. I learned my lesson about using substrate in a used tank just because it's cycled and looks nice at the expense of the most beautiful fish I had at the time. You're not alone.

Wound up losing all but the four peacocks. Four white calvus, four gold head comps, four leleupi, the polystigma, the orange scribble and the cylindricus all bit the dust. When I took the heater out it sounded like a child's rattle...very noticeable so I'm not sure it didn't happen after I put it in the tank. Either way, the four remaining fish seem to have made it through.
