We have a 30gal (36" long) set up with a fairly large male Ngara Flametail from Jon that is a proven breeder along with two females that we stripped 10 fry from one of a couple of weeks ago. However, we're not sure if the fish spawned here or at Jon's right before we got them. We also have a male German Red peacock that's about 4" and one female that dropped the eggs she was already holding the day we got that pair here. My question is this, will having two males in just a 30 gal but with females for both deter them from spawning. My Flametail has been doing a lot of flashing but has not been able to entice a female yet. Everybody gets along very well as there are a couple small Frontosas, an Inkfin Calvus and a couple catfish in there as well. Will one of the peacocks take dominance over the tank as far as spawning or with time will they both do their thing.
By the way Jon, if you read this I would like to get a couple more females for my German Red if you can get them.

It seems like a lot of fish for a 30 gallon. But it could be too that the females aren't ready. They have to have eggs in order to breed. The guys sometimes still get flashy here even when not breeding--I think it's because there are other males around and they're doing the dominant thing. As long as it doesn't escalate to fighting I'm cool with it. Do you have another tank?

NEVERMIND! I just watched them spawn! The German Reds. I have never seen that, it was really cool. I guess that answers my questions..... I agree about the 30 gal being kinda small for all of those fish. It doesn't seem to be a problem yet but once things start getting bigger, We have a 75 gal that we are going to set up. There hasn't been any fighting though, that i've seen anyway.....Wow that was cool. Maybe not as big a deal to you guys but that was a first time for me. And not even thirty minutes after I wrote about it.

She ate them. Darn. She's still kinda small, maybe three inches. This is why? who knows, oh well. Still cool to see, maybe we'll have success next time.

You will have all out war on your hands with the peacocks, but congrats on the quick spawn. One of the male peacocks will either kill the other or one will lose color. The females will be hard to tell apart, and you might have crossing going on soon. The faster you get the 75g up and running the better. You have two beautiful choices there, and I know how good that male ngara looked when he left. Two days later I had another male color up and now he is in full dress.

Well the only reason I think that is because she ate when i fed them. I'm pretty sure there is nothing in her mouth now..... Advice taken though on the 75gal. Time to get it going.
