Bloat is an intestinal parasite that basically clogs the intestine of the fish. Signs are that they quit eating, stay by themselves on the bottom or top of water, and have a thin white, stringy poop that floats around in the water for a long time. I feel it is passed from fish to fish when a healthy fish gets that poop in its mouth. The best treatment in my opinion is quick Medical treatment. I use Metrozinodole flake, and bath treatment. Clout also works, but I find it as a harsher treatment. With Metro I feed the flake to the healthy fish and I treat the whole take also. This kills the parasite in the floating poop while medicating the fish through the mouth and gills. I have had a lot of success with this. I treat for 7 days doing a 20-50% water change daily while adding more meds after each change. Then after 7 days I continue feeding the Metro flake for an extra 7 days. I can tell who is or is not going to make it and if I'm sure I remove them. If anyone has anything to add keep this thread running.

Jon, I agree Metro is the way to go. When ever I get new fish I start them out with foods soaked in metro. I do this for 2 weeks as a preventative.

Green peas and other veggies help keep their systems clean. I fast them once a week and feed veggies the day after.

Question: the fish who have bloat stop eating, so how to get them to eat the medicated flake?

If the fish will not eat, then you have to treat the water with metro. Be careful to follow the directions. This is best done in a smaller tank because Metro is not cheap.

Thanks Joe. I get nervous every time I see one of my tropheus poop at all. They've never had white droppings but they're not exactly dark. Maybe more light light green to a shade darker than sand. They always eat though so I felt safe.

If it isn't clear or white they are most likely just fine.
I think this weekend I will talk my wife into taking some pictures of my trophs and the new fish. 8 fry of Xystichromis phytophagus "Christmas Fulu"

Except that I think bloat is a disease of Africans only so you should be safe there.

It is a lot to go through. I've got it in my tropheus tank now. I lost one. They all ate tonight though so things look up today.

well its in the 165 gallon tank.. so it sounds like that just doubles my problems...if it is bloat? But i just dont want the others getting sick in the tank or dieing because of the treatment. I had been wanting this green terror for a while and its my luck that hes sick! hopefully its not karma telling me i cant have everything i want

Jamie, all fish can get Bloat. If yours fits the description then I would suggest ordering some Metrozinodole. I just ordered some from drsfostersmith.com a few weeks ago. Though If he is the only one, then I would suggest putting him in a smaller hospital tank until all is good. This will save you a lot of money, since Metro is expensive. Read all symptoms on this page and determine what your fish may have. www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/fecal_disorders.htmlThe site I listed above sells what you need or you can find similar products at various websites. I mostly shop @ drsfostersmith.com IF they are cheaper.
