I was reading random info on tetras online, and found that they do breed in the tank, and that if you have tetras they are breeding. They lay eggs regularly every 10-14 days and get eaten by the other tank members. So that's why we never see them multiply! In the wild they breed in the rainy season. They're egg scatterers, laying eggs all over plants.

Holy crap! That must be one of the predatory tetras! Cool fish, though.

Interesting... about the 10-14 day bit. I never knew that. I will have to keep a closer eye on these serpae tetras that I have. I might start moving them back and forth between the two 10 gallon tanks to see what happens... maybe I can come up with some fry from them. what do you guys and gals think about that? Or would it cause too much stress on them?

To get viable fry, I've learned it's more bother than it's worth. The way to do it is, get a smaller tank, make sure you have a pair. Keep them separate and condition them with a variety of foods for 2 weeks. Make some RO water and keep it real soft. Run a filter on the breeder tank (2 to 5 gallon tank) filled with pre-boiled peat to keep the acidity up. Warm the water to 78F and put in a fine-leafed plant. Cover the tank and wait til evening, then add the pair. Female first, wait at least half an hour, then add the male. Keep the tank covered to prevent them from jumping out, then cover the entire tank with a cardboard box, which you've cut a panel that can be removed later on. The panel is about 1/3 the size of the box. Tetras spawn at first light, so in the morning, remove the panel and let them think it's dawn. Once the eggs are laid, pull the parents before they start eating them, and feed the parents. Raise the eggs. Tetras are so cheap that most people don't do it. But it can be done.
