I looking for a big patch of java fern, or some other plant that will grow thick in an aquarium. My knowledge is very limited when it comes to plants. Does anyone have any java fern? Any other ideas on other plants that would do well. I'd like some that grow tall but stay thick.

Wisterias are a good stem plant that grow well in low lighting. They're also fun to watch - I moved a cutting to the front of my 26, and about a week later, the stem has curved itself over the driftwood and is growing towards the center of the tank where the single T5 is. Another interesting thing about them is that they'll grow broad leaves when light is low or too high, and when they get closer to the light, each leaf will thin out. That reminds me to take some pics of my tanks. Will post soon! Another easy-growing plant is anubia nana. They prefer shaded areas and should be attached to driftwood or a rock using cotton thread or fishing line. Your plecos will love these because the broad leaves tend to get covered in algae if there's too much light (>1 watt per gallon) or they're not shaded. The only fertilizers I use for these 2 plants are Flourish and API's Leaf Zone. Nitrates in the 10-20ppm range helps a bit, too. I also have a small 1qt DIY yeast reactor for CO2. It's actually a product I bought from PetSmart for $10 that comes w/ a ladder-style bubble counter/diffuser. The website I like most for general plant articles is www.aquabotanic.com. Plenty of useful info there!

Thanks for the advise! I love planted tanks and that's where I want to go with mine eventually. I planted some wisteria that is growing super fast. Also planted some green and white acorus (grass), but the pleco's are stripping the blades on it. They love it! The java fern is also growing well.

Your right. I got it at petsmart. The way the pleco's are eating on it, it won't last long anyway. Thanks for the info. I won't buy anymore of that!

Drew is referring to the plants sold in tubes at PetSmart. I'm not sure if those will carry any algae, as they're sold w/ the stems and leaves in open air. I referred him to these and forgot to mention the non-aquatics they try to pass off. One that I made the mistake of buying was a tube of 3 "aqua ferns". After researching these, I immediately took them out and threw them away.

I only have a single, 24-watt, 6700K T5 HO fixture on the 26, and the wisterias seem to love it. They are very similar to water sprite in regards to lighting.
Once the stem is large enough, they will send out "branches" like other large-stem plants. The root structures are also interesting. I can't think of the proper name, but roots will grow from the base of each leaf from the stem and seek out substrate to secure themselves. I have one "branch" about 10" from the substrate and roots are getting around 4-5" long! Those are the best to cut and replant.

I'm still looking for some nice narrow leaf java fern. I have seen some in stores, but it didn't look very good. If anyone has some please let me know. I'd be happy to buy it or trade some ABN's for it. Thanks

Hey plecoman. Got your message. I do have several nice, large, old, pieces of Java Fern. And many smaller pieces too. I couldn't tell you if it is large or small leafed. My honest opinion would be it is large leafed as my older plants have pretty big leaves, but I am not sure. I started with this plant some 20+ years ago and have had it ever since. It does grow slowly though. Must have patience with it. I would be happy to share a few pieces with you. --- Tell me about these clown Pleco's you have. Are they BN or are they big species when they grow up ? I have a few big Pleco's, but much prefer the BN. I have several colors of the BN and would be interested in a swap for yours if they indeed are the BN species. ----- Get back with me and we'll talk a little more. Thanks---Rick
