Is it true that nothing lives in the Dead Sea? And if so, why not? And while we're at it, does anything live in Salt Lake?

I think the dead sea has way too much salt. As for Salt Lake, I have no idea.

I went looking. From Wikipedia-- There are no fish in the Great Salt Lake because of the high salinity. The only aquatic animals able to live in the lake are tiny brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana). Their tiny, hard-walled eggs or cysts (diameter of about 200 micrometers)[31] are harvested in quantity during the fall and early winter. They are fed to prawns in Asia,[25] sold as novelty "Sea-Monkeys," sold either live or dehydrated in pet stores as a fish food, and used in testing of toxins, drugs, and other chemicals.[6] There are also two species of salt flies[32] and some bacteria and algae.

I know that this is an older board but there are several lakes in the world like this. It can only be a monoculture of brine shrimp and their food. The other lake i am thinking of, i read an article about it called lake albert. The guy that harvests the brine shrimp from it, owns his own brine shrimp packing place(home business) and harvests quite a bit from there(cysts and brine shrimp). I dont remember the exact number. These are the olny places brine shrimp can live because elsewhere they would be dinner and wiped out. But they do live in other places as well. In the lakes overseas when flamingos eat the brine shrimp they turn a pinkish color(also from krill), but the pink color comes from I have done a lot of reasearch on brine shrimp. I really like them as a food source. lol

That's cool--I never really thought about that. How WOULD the brine shrimp fluorish otherwise? They're food for all fish.

Interesting research Angel. I have read for years about the Great Salt Lake and the San. Fran. Bay r/t the brine shrimp business that we all enjoy so we can hatch our own shrimp to feed our fry. (Also, be aware I have read that the San. Fran shrimp are smaller than the Salt Lake shrimp; for those tiny fry some of us try to raise)--------But this brings up a question I seem to be unable to find looking @ Google. I don't find the guy running the brine shrimp business on Lake Albert. Where is this lake and can you re-find your info again? It might be worth researching a bit to see where this guy is and if he could sell the brine shrimp eggs we all use at a cheaper price, since he sounds like a small personal business. Then again maybe not. Just wondering if you would research and tell us more or guide us in our search. Thanks.

That was Jody that mentioned Lake Albert. I've never heard of it before then.

Thanks Angel. Looks like these folks are primarily wholesalers, but they have a claim on the price list that says if their product is not sold in our area that they would sell direct to us. Their prices are very good and they offer an even bigger price break if bought in bulk cases. The question then becomes, #1 what is their product like in comparision to the others on the market, #2 Is their product sold locally, and #3 how many of us would be willing to buy into an order, if we so decided, and buy in bulk to get the great prices offered. ---- I think we should look into this company and then maybe have a topic listed in Roberts rules for discussion @ the next swap/meet. (or we can discuss it here too.) I have written to them already, asking if their product is sold locally so we will know if it is feasable to proceed with this discussion. I will post here when I know more. --- Meantime, has anyone within our forum done business with them, know of their product (good or bad), or have knowledge of their product being sold locally

No response from the company mentioned above, www.oregondesertbrineshrimp.com/today. I reckon they will respond to my mail to them one day next week since today is Friday. I will re-post here after I hear from them.
