Haven't been around for a while. Been kind of a tough winter, but things are getting better. My mom had a stroke but she has recovered nicely. Can't leave her alone more than a few hours at a time, but she's pretty much back to where she was before the stroke.
Been a bit tough on the fish front, too. I posted a few months ago that I murdered almost all the fish I bought from Jon with a defective heater that turned the 55 in my bedroom into a sauna. I've also had a lot of trouble with the 75 gallon tank that housed a mature community of peacocks. Kept having flareups of fungus. I'd treat it and it would clear up for a month or two then flare up again. Finally, a week ago I noticed that an indestructible growth of black hair algae (or brush algae) had cropped up on the rocks in the tank and on the filter extensions. It was very black, thick and short and fugly to look at. I took the rocks and artificial plants out and am in the process of converting it to a rainbow tank with a few barbs. My mom sits in the living room most of the day and has a close and open view of the tank, so I've decided battle against my pro-African bias and just turn it into a nice, colorful tank of active fish for her.
The tank was mature and doing great for almost a year before the problems started. I suspect it's just a case of lack of attention. I haven't been nearly as reliable doing water changes this winter and it seems the tank just got away from me. I think i have it on the road to recovery now.
Anyway, just wanted to check in with everyone. I'll be around a lot more now, hopefully.
