Well I lost both of my clown loaches today. I turned off the filter I bought with the 9 v ultra violet light for a couple of minutes. Then I emptied it and took it to an other tank. Plugged it all in and it worked for a min then nothing. I was thinking dang it i just bought this thing what is up. So I unplugged it and took it into the bathroom to see what the heck was going on and why the motor wasn't running. Well my 2 small clown loaches were in the motor. Not a pretty sight and upset me. What the heck were they doing in there? So anyway I now have no clown loaches and am very bummed about it as they were the clowns of the tank.

Aw man! Sorry George! I know how that sucks--I lost all but one blue angel that way. The last one of course lived all this time then bit it coz of ich! It's really rough to find your fishies have met the impeller

Sorry to hear news George. Now I am glad I couldn't find one of these. What is your plan to eliminate the problem if you use it again ?

I am still using it. I talked with Ken at work about that and find out clowns will get into closed in areas every chance they get. So no more clown loaches for me. End of that problem. It was not the sterilizer that was the problem. I had it off in the tank before I put it into an other tank and that is when they swam into the out tube. I shook the water out of it through the out tube but they must have already gotten into the motor area by then. Anyways I just will not get anymore clown loaches. None of my other fish can really fit into it it nor really seem interested in going near it. I do have a piece of sponge that I put in it now when it is off just incase.

Glad to hear of your plan for future prevention. I may still be in the market for one if another ever comes in. Store(s) are still out of them. Just as well though, gotta be saving for the fish swap now. Might just want to spend a dollar or two. :-) Thanks for the further explanation. And Clowns do hide or look for hiding spots a lot, just as Ken said.

I have 3 small clowns from when Critter had a ton for sale at $10/3 or more. Took 3 home, acclimated them per Critter's instructions, but one was just a bit lethargic even when acclimating. The next morning, I found it belly up at the bottom of the tank. So I bagged him up, grabbed a water sample, and took him back to Critter. They said my pH was too low, at 6.7, for loaches. Now I read up on water parameters for clowns before I bought them, and most references stated that clowns can live in water with a pH of 6.5 - 7.5. Critter was nice enough to replace the one. I got it home and actually did a slower acclimation, took about an hour total before I put it into the tank.
Now I have a nice, small school of 3 very happy clown loaches. They're so happy because of the thousands of ramshorn snails made a nice buffet for them. :-)
Edit: I meant to post something else here and lost my train of thought.
The hiding places I have are a couple rock "caves" and a small, plastic half-log you find in the reptile section at PetSmart. The clowns love hanging out under the log, but will swim a slalom from the log to the rocks. It's very fun to watch, if they don't see me. When they see me, they go back to hiding under the half-log.
