I couldn't make this up. Today a mexican woman and her kids came in. So the daughter wanted 2 bettas. I asked if they were putting them in the same tank. She smiled and said yes. I explained to her what would happen if she did that. So they go over to one of the salt water tanks and say I want 2 of the clowns. So as I am fishing them out I ask if they had a salt water tank. She says yes. After I had them bagged up she asked me if table salt is what they put into the tank. I look at her and tell her what a salt water tank is and ask how big her tank is. Well they have a 5 gallon tank. OMG really. So I explain to her what it would take to house the clowns. And no table salt will not do. Then she wanted to know what fish they could put into a 5 gallon tank. I pointed her to the fresh water fish. I let someone else take care of them because I was ready to throttle some one at this stage. This is just a portion of what my day was. We really did have mentally handicappped people in today that were smarter than that......

AC has kinda become the "free Mexican zoo" in that area. They seem to make a day of it, and rarely buy things. Just something to keep the kids quiet for a while.

That is the kind of person this forum is here to help. I see how it could be frustrating, but what some think is common knowledge isn't. If a mechanic put me in front of a car and wanted a belt changed he would think I was not all there. Better luck tomorrow

True. The most common question I get from "non aquarium people" is, "when you change the water, do you have to take it all out and where do you put the fish?" Makes us laugh, but for someone who doesn't know, it's a legitimate question.

It is true AC is more of a free zoo for all people. Those are the ones who just want to look. They might ask a few questions but mostly they take their kids in to look at the fish and reptiles. I have helped a lot of people trying out fish keeping for the first time. Some of them have become very happy with their new tank and not losing fish. There are also people who have had tanks for even years and never change their water or they take their fish out to change the whole tank out. When they come in with the why are my fish dying it is explained to them what they are doing wrong and how to do it right. I think I have heard it all since I started working there. yesterday was just one of those frustrating days. I have a big problem with the language barrier we have. I do not speak spanish nor japanese. That is the 2 languages spoken when they do not speak english very well. All I can do is hope they understand enough of what I am telling them to not kill off their new fish. I am getting ready to go to work today. I hope for a good day.

It's harder to listen to it I think when you really care about all the fish. Men are so much better at this hobby for that reason usually. We're so sensitive. And definitely they're better at selling them! I can't really think like "Ok I'm gonna sell you this fish and tell you how to take care of it then forget and when you come back and it's dead I'll sell you another one to try again when you didn't listen the first time." I even call and write and check up on the fish I let go with people LOL

I feel your pain. I have worked part-time at two chain pet stores in the past(years ago). super.. and ...co. I couldn't tell you how many times things like that happened. Some times the management/staff was just as ignorant...very frustrating. At least at AC you probably work with knowlegable staff and have some of the best costomers as well. I won't lie I have gone there to window shop. Hang in there we all have those days.

We all window shop there! And sometimes we buy. I think that's ok, don't you? But when it's used for a babysitting service, or a playground, that's when it gets ridiculous.

I do not mind the window shoppers. And I have explained a tank set up to people who do not buy. But maybe one day they will buy and will have the knowledge when they do. I do not like the daycare aspect of the whole thing. Either we have people who let their kids run like wild animals in the place or the flip side is having people who bring kids in who do not want to be there and then smacking them silly when they try to whine to go home. I do not like that either and have to go to the other side of the store so as to not throttle the parents. I do like working in a place where the staff knows what they are doing. And yes I am guilty of wanting the best for every fish I sell. I keep in contact with most of the people I sell my fish to. I do ask a lot of questions of people I sell any fish to. I am more attached to the fish as a whole than the men there I am sure. I think being a mom and a nurturer it is harder to sell the fish because I do not want it to be killed. It breaks my heart every time someone brings in a dead fish.
