i've had my Stuartgranti peacock for about two months. the past few days he has been hiding / keeping to himself, and not eating. he isn't rushing to the surface when i feed the others and he seems to be breathing a little heavier than the rest. his fins are not cramped, while he is hiding he still flares them out, and when i am not around he doesn't hide but the not eating part is what scares me. as soon as i come close to the tank he hides while the rest get excited because they think it is feeding time. all the other fish seem fine.
i've not seen any white stringy feces. i don't think it is bloat.
i feed cichlid excel and spirulina flakes but never more than everyone can eat in about 30 seconds. occasionally lately i've feed omnivorous frozen food - brine shrimp and spirulina mix. no more than once a week.
as far as i can tell my water is near perfect. ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, all zero. ph is 8.2. temperature 80. gh around 450.
i don't know what to do here, all the flow charts i've seen don't really get me anywhere.
this sucks, he is my favorite and best looking fish.
any advice would be appreciated.

One thing I wonder that I don't see here, does he have any bite marks on him? Other fish bothering him? Torn fins or scales? If so, someone could be bullying him into submission. Also, just because the poop isn't there when you look doesn't mean he hasn't had it. I've had fish get bloat and I didn't see the poop--partially because of the hiding! Devils! Anyway, it's so thin and almost transparent sometimes that it's difficult to see floating in the water or on the substrate, and even tough to see on the fish. Does he seem puffy? Is his vent red streaked or poking down?

no aggression. no physical damage. with the exception of my synodontis and pleco he is the largest fish in the tank. no one messes with him. i don't have any aggression issues at all in the tank actually. i've not seen any of the feces described anywhere in the tank nor does he have any abnormalities. honestly it is like the only thing that is wrong is that he is afraid of me. when i come into the room i see him out but as soon as he sees me he heads for the rock pile. this is strange because he was never like this until just this week. the only thing i can think of... there has been quite a bit more activity in the tank in the last month. i've moved everyone from a 55. i've added rock. i've added more fish. i've added more rock. i've re-arranged. i've also been changing water more frequently (once a week) to keep the nitrates down. i can't think of anything else wrong other than the fact that all this commotion just has him stressed out. i've had fish long enough to know that something is wrong but i just don't know what. you just know when your fish is acting differently. i'm out of ideas

he is still not eating.
when i come to the tank he freaks out and starts darting everywhere. he still looks perfectly healthy except he is starting to get pretty thin. as skittish as he is acting i am afraid if isolate him / try to move him it is just going to make things worse. things aren't looking good.

Can you put him in the breeder net?

i have my female lab in the current net but i could get another one. i'll get one tomorrow, if you think it might help?
i don't think he has any disease, i just think he is stressed out with all the changes lately. he has been perfectly healthy up until the past week. i thought about isolating him but i'm afraid moving him will only make it worse.

he was out and about when i came home till he saw me but then he moved to safety under the rock pile as soon as i came into the room. he seemed to be breathing heavily. i started a water change with the hopes of making it easier to catch him and place him in the breeder net. by the time i got 30% of the water out of the tank he had wedged himself between two lace rocks. few minutes later he was stone cold dead. RIP has anyone ever heard of anything like this? i certainly have not. i suppose i need to keep an eye on the tank for a few days just to make sure it wasn't really a disease.

The best thing that would help is a pic the fish, and then a pick of him upside down at the belly. Without visual signs it is a tough call. I would keep a close eye to others acting that way.
