Hi I am new here, you can call me Nitro, or Eric, it doesn't matter as I would like to get to know all of you better, and learn as much as I can from you all. I have been an hobbyist for a few years now off and on. My first successful run was 6 mollies, 3 platties, 2 guppies, an Australian Rainbow, and a pleco. All in a tiny tiny 10. Then I got my second tank, a 29g, and did Malawi Cichlids, don't know what kind exactly, was kind of yellow, and black on the dorsal fin. and some other. They were in an "Assorted African Cichlid" tank at petsmart. I have recently got back in the hobby as I have a crap load of free time on my hands these days, and have currently two tanks running unsafely I might add for some fellows in there, but what is a guy to do. I have a 55g Bow Front with some beautiful Kenyi, and some Cherry Red Zebras that I was fortunate enough to receive from Angel, and a 10g with a Male Pink Convict and Female, and sorry guys, but serape tetras. I have two more tanks, but no more hardware to run them, I am working on that though as I need a filter for another 10g, and one for a 29g. I hope to get some pics on here soon, but I am having difficulty getting everyone to hold together and smile... guess they don't like cheese! Well I am laid back and like I said, I am willing to learn all that I can.

Welcome! Sounds like you've got a lot going on! Great! Looking forward to meeting.
Oh, and if you need some equipment on the cheap, I've got about 20 filters laying around.

It's so great you joined Eric! Remember the Paris get-together this Sunday if you can make it. And there's a swap next month. Details will be announced after this weekend. I think your yellows were probably yellow labs. They're my favorite mbuna. And for you salt water guys, Eric's lovely wife would love to learn how to successfully keep salt water fish . As would a lot of us!!

Oh! I forgot to mention, I have done SW once.... I had, I think, damsels... either way they were neon purple, I loved them, but it took a lot more work to get it setup, and it only ran for a month if I remember correctly I had to move, and I couldn't even give my fish away, so I had to lay them to sleep. That was the last thing I was working on when I fell out of the game. Now I am back and it is only going to get better.

The bright colored mbuna and peacocks make a lot of people think they're salt water so I had been constantly asked about my upstairs tank by visitors, if it was salt, but I never have tried it yet. The colors were the reason for wanting salt water and the Africans have color so it wasn't important anymore. However, now I want to do it for a different reason--just to do it! Because it's a part of the hobby I haven't yet tried. The expense is the thing that has me hesitant to try it, so I'm looking forward to hearing how it can be done for less than a fortune. Your wife said she would love a salt water tank, so when you get the urge again she'll be happy you did!

Hi Eric. I'm Phil. First it would be great to see you in Paris Sunday. There will be a lot of know how there! Includeing for saltwater setups. The other thing I've learned is not to buy from a petshop unless its a really good deal or a must have fish. Most fish you look for someone here will have some and probibly cheaper. I'm not saying don't support your LFS. I frequent ours on a regular basis; but the fish you get here will usually be of better quality that I have seen in "Mixed Ciclids" tanks at pet stores. Pet Smart had some Red Jewels a few weeks ago and they really pailed in compairson to the pair I have from "Little Rich" and they came from Tina. Swap next month. Just a thought.

Phil, I still have a few of them left and one turned out to be a TURQUOISE jewel! They outdid their parents for sure. I keep them in a community tank where their eggs will get eaten if they lay, but they really stay brighter than I've ever seen even from the blood red jewels that are advertised. Glad I still have a few for the color.

Yeah, I agree. I don't really support pet stores, and even some LFS for livestock, as I can't stand the conditions that they put the fish through. Most of the time they are in over crowded tanks, and that really is a stress on them as they are either fighting for dominance, or food, and some have to stay in these conditions for a long time. There used to be a really good LFS in Dickson, but the owner sold to a , and I hate to label anyone for any reason, druggie, and he is more into money than the fish, or any other animal he has down there for that matter. No frozen blood worms, only has 3-4 fish per tank at any given time, and it is usually something like gold fish (not fancy), or feeder fish. How sad. I am fortunate enough to have met you all, and everyone is local kind of... lol.
