The evolution of snakes was accompanied by significant changes in the highly conserved regulatory site responsible for the inclusion of the SHH gene expression (Sonic hedgehog). As a result of substitutions and deletions within the enhancer, the binding sites of transcription factors were “spoiled” or lost, and the SHH gene ceased to turn on in those areas of the embryo where in all other vertebrates, from cartilage fish to mammals, limb buds are formed. The gene itself and its other regulatory regions remained at the same time conservative, as one would expect, based on the multifunctionality of the SHH gene.
