MY problem is with the undergravel filter. the power head (marineland 550) on the left side does not work right. I bought a new one and still the same problem. when I push the tube down into the undergravel filter, firmly,. the pump stops drawing water. When I pull up the tube, slightly it starts working. It works fine in my sink, but when I put my thumb over the draw tube, of course it stops.
I am thinking (guessing) the UG filter is stopped up preventing the water from drawing up into the powerhead? Is this possible?
I have a 29 gallon tank. two 550 penguin power heads for UG filter. one TopFin 30 hanging on back. 3 fish and 1 craw fish. This tank and fish were given to me from someone moving. the tank and stand is 15 years old. the fish 5 years old .
the 3 fish are African Cichlids. from Lake Malawi and in the Mbuna Family.
It must be in the UG filter because it work when I pull the tube out of the filter. Thanks

I am new, and have no idea if I am on the right page or not ? In fact, I have no idea what page I am on, now? The chat is not working? Or I don't know how to make it work? It asks for my password and name again. It this the same as signing on? If I am on the wrong page, please forgive. Again, I don't even know which page I am on. I just saw some people who signed on TODAY (thanksgiving) and reply to them. I am senior citizen and not a computer person.
took me forever to find my 2 posts and no one answered yet? I guess, I need to remove my UG filter, that is a big deal to a new aquarium person. Not sure I should even attempt it? IF the UG filter is stopped up how would you suggest to unstop it? without removing everything in the tank. Just trying to get my power head to work in my Under Gravel Filter.
The person who gave me the tank. Did everything. Moved them to my house. I just watched. I now little about computers and aquariums. But, I can learn.
thanks in advance.

If you push the tube down too far it'll not be able to get water because it'll be touching the glass at the bottom, right? So I'd think try it with it pulled up slightly and see if things seem to be filtering. I use canister, hang on back, and sponge filters. Not really well versed with undergravel. Welcome to the forum! I haven't been able to get the chat to work either and I don't think it gets any use.

I use under gravel filters on most of my tanks and Angel is right. If you push the tube to far down it can get on the glass and will not work. If you have a new power head that would be what I would suspect. I prefer ug filters myself. I wouldn't take it out they really are good. If I was able I would come over and help you out but I had back surgery almost 4 weeks ago and am unable to do a lot. If you want to PM me and maybe a picture of the tank. I can trouble shoot for you. And welcome to the forum it really isn't to hard to maneuver around.
