This is one of my favorite Malawi Haps. They have evolved to be a predator in the lake with similarities to a barracuda in the ocean. That is why their common name is "Malawi Barracuda". They also get the barracuda like teeth when full grown. This species is the macrophthalmus which gets about 8-10" max. They need a 6' tank when full grown, but can live in a 75-90g for most of their life. They like frozen krill, silversides, salad shrimp, and pellet food. The frozen food will get them big fast. They have a silver torpedo body built for speed and get a bright yellow bottom half the is really pretty. In the tank, they prefer lots of room with a couple of rocks to hide behind, but most important is a lot of room to swim.

Beautiful fish. Do you have them in a tank with other fish?

I love these fish! They're so hyper in the tank--swimming in front of you left and right trying to get some attention! Probably vying for food . Really cool guys.

I am keeping them with small 2-3" peacocks. He is about 4.5". They won't eat fish unless they are hungry, so I keep him well fed. I have another type of Hap known as the Malawi Hawk "Aristochromis christyi" that will eat fish half their size. Every time I walk by the tank it seems like there is a tail hanging out their mouth. So they were put in solitary confinement until I could put together a tank of all large fish. www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=994
