I have a Penn Plax Action SEA DOG decoration: www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=545I removed algea from inside the clear helmet by filling it up with bleach and leaving overnight. Them I flushed out the bleach. The helmet can not be removed. It has 2 small holes. You can not get to the algea to simply wipe it out. The helmet is crystal clear, now. Is this safe to return to my aquarium? This was a lot of trouble for a 10.00 ornament, but I will need to clean it over and over because of the algea problem. How can I know all bleach has been removed, before putting back in the tank? It has been flushed out many, many, times and I can not smell any bleach. Is it safe?

I would be scared to death personally. Especially if you were putting it back into a tank where you cared about what all was in it. $10 ornament vs $ in fish and habitat. I'm the wrong one to answer though, maybe one of these guys with more experience can help........

If it is soaked in a dechorinator it should be good. I use 10% bleach solution to clean anything and let it set over night. Even driftwood(actually driftwood soaks in it for a week) But you need to soak for a while (with wood) to get all of the bleach out of it. Since he did a full out bleach soak I would use dechoreinator of some kind to soak it in and then rinse. If you do not smell the bleach it should be good. You would be surprised at how much bleach they use at the critter when they clean stuff. Scared me and I spent extra time rinsing till I was shown the secret. They use a dechlorinator to rinse the items.

the general consensus is the sniff test. if you can smell bleach, rinse it more.
i bleach my holey rock about once every 2-3 months. been doing it for years with no problems.

The bad thing is when you have used a lot of bleach that is all you can smell for a while. LOL

it doesn't take much bleach to clean things. just a cupful for a large bucket, if that much.
the easy thing about holey rock is that what the bleach doesn't get in a 10 minute soak, the sun will get in a few hours.
doubt that works for plastic, though.

I use a cap per like 5 gallons. Then I let it sit for a few days. The I put it in clean water for a couple days. I change the water a few times until I don't smell any more bleach. With the holey rock I just put it on the back deck in the sun for a couple days.

If you're worried, you can also let it air out. If you can't smell the bleach, then all the non-chlorine chemicals are gone, and if it's completely dry, the chlorine is neautralized anyways.

I soak new driftwood in the 10% bleach solution for a week then rinse and soak it in water for a couple of weeks. I change the water every couple of days. Doing this disinfects it and soaks it and gets the tannins out of it. You can take up to six weeks to totally get it done but it is worth it when you are collecting driftwood and do not want to get anything bad in your water.

Wow, that is a long time but I guess its better than losing a tank of fish. I hardly ever use Driftwood because some of it can lower your Ph. but this would have worked good back when i use to have Discus ,and Rams ,

It is great for discus, rams, endlers, guppies, bettas and quite a few of your CA and SA fish. Since I have gotten away from the africans I can use it in most all of my tanks. And it looks really good if you get some plants and mosses growing on it.
