I've learned something new. Tap water here has phosphates and nitrates. My phosphates are sky high and this is causing the algae to build up. I didn't know about phosphates! The answer to this dilemma? Use RO water, and don't feed flake food. Flake food also contains phosphates. Imagine!

Anyone know of a way to reduce existing phosphates without doing a 100% water change? If that even does it--I think it's temporary.

If you are using a cannister or HOB filter, you could use one of those chemical pillows that is specifically formulated to remove phosphates. The pillow would probably work fine in the old style air driven corner filter.

My filter is the live rock. I do have a skimmer where the filter normally would go.

and those chemical pillows are rechargable using salt water. instructions come with them. foster and smith via the web used to carry them. they work very well on small tanks. not sure how many u would need for bigger tanks. their 800# or free catalog would tell ya.
