I've got a problem going through one of my tanks. It starts by paralyzing the fishes tail then works its way up. The fish don't die immediately they just lay on the bottom and gasp. It started with some fish I got from the lfs so I called him and he's having the same problem. Any ideas?

Hey Rich! You may have done this already but just in case you didn't, plus I was curious, I've done some googling and there were two things that popped up. First, was incorrect Ph for the fish. I doubt that would be the issue, especially since the LFS is also experiencing this condition. The second was here www.fishyportal.com/cgi-bin/pub/diag?c=v&id=60&did=233112and is backed up by other things about bacterial infection. Sometimes people experienced paralysis after an ich treatment and it was suspected to be a secondary bacterial thing as well. So it could be that either the supplier had a bacterial condition, or the LFS did. But either way it is a strong possibility. Have you done a big water change yet?

Yeah I did a water and tried various medicines that are usually quick cures but this only slowed it down for awhile then was back up to full strength.

Did you tell me on the phone that it was cardinal tetras that caused the problem? If so, were these wild caught and where did the LFS get them? Wondering if they were ever treated after import (if they were WC).

Three questions - what typ(s) of fish are affected? What are your water parameters? What other fish do you have in the tank?

The affected fish Gertrudes rainbows, captive bred cardinal tetras( they started it), and two Celebes rainbows. The only other fish in the are some livebearers. The water parameters are all normal.

You could try a combination of Clout, Furnace, and Quick Cure with the lights out and no food for a few days if your guess is any form of fungus or bacterial infection. Follow instructions of ea. med., but I believe you would dose each day. This is assuming you have fish strong enough to survive whatever they have. Not knowing what it is kind of leave you in the dark and a wide spectrum gram positive and gram negative medication approach should not completely out of the question. Just some food for thought. I just don't know what they have so I am expressing a cover all type treatment. What do some of you others on here still think ?

Well, there is a pathogen that's been going around the country and wiping out less hardy fish - like angelfish... it's a combination of a parasite which shortly after infection leads to septicemia very quickly and causes death. Some thinks it's a virus. If there is any redness around the base of the fins on the fish that start to show symptoms, I would assume that is the case. Most people advocate for a complete cull of your whole system and disinfect if this is the case, however, many have been successful in treating with a malachite green/formalin treatment in combination with an antibiotic to take care of the sep. I had this last year before we really knew what it was. It spreads like wildfire. I used straight malachite green and a med available at the Critter - Paracide green I think. Also salt at 1 Tbs/5 gals and Oxytetracycline for 10 days as soon as the parasite med was through.
It might be something else of course, but this pathogen has apparently affected some wholesalers because it is everywhere - also - other fish can CARRY it with NO symptoms. I lost Cardinals and angels, but nothing else when I had it last year. If it is virus, it's smart to assume that it mutates as it's passed around.
If you think that this is a treatment you want to try, I do have malachite green in excess. I bought the crystals that make a gallon of solution, so I have a ton of it if you need it jsut let me know.

Sometimes people experienced paralysis after ich treatment, and this was supposed to be a secondary bacterial thing as well. Thus, it may happen that either the provider had a bacterial disease or LFS.
