Was at the critter today and just couldn't leave without the big red hermit crab with white circles and little hairs on his legs. He was walking vertical on just his left legs! A real showoff. So I brought him home and not long after, he was eating a turbo snail. Granted the turbo snail was on its back and may have been dying, but then I googled him. He is the white spotted hermit crab and he can get huge, and eats stuff. Anyone have experience with them? How long are my royal gramma, diamond goby, and cleaner and fire shrimp safe? If at all.

Hey Angel. How big is "huge" ? You might need to consider another trip to exchange immediately and maybe even for full swap value if done asap.

In the wild can get to 12"! But I think half that in the aquarium. He now is in the shell he ate the snail out of. I won't have a shell to fit a 6" crab even so that would be interesting. The only other option as far as keeping him would be to have him in a tank with all large fish that can handle themselves I suppose. But hopefully it would be some time before he got that big! The tang and coral beauty should be ok, but I don't know that I'll be able to keep the royal gramma diamond goby or any snails and smaller hermits with him--and my shrimp! And starfish. Kind of worrisome. But he's already won over the grandsons so I'm in a tight spot.

I hate to say it - sounds like it is time to set up another tank!

I'm planning to sell my nano and wasn't going to replace it but might have to replace it with something bigger. I don't like the whole enclosed small space for saltwater after all. The big one is so much less needy.

Those crabs are very carniverous. It will eat anything it can catch. that might include your fish when they are sleeping. I would remove it ASAP.

Thanks, J.D. It isn't the solution I'd hoped for but I want my fish and shrimp so it seems the only solution.

I've checked my shrimp tank parameters(no one is in it yet) and it's all reading 0, so for now I believe he should have a chamber in there. But he'll need either another big tank to go in, or to leave. I think most here would pick another tank! LOL
