This is the Poret Foam filter I purchased from Jon (riftfish.com) for my new 29 gallon tank that I just setup. The first pic is showing the amount of surface for bio to grow. I think it's going to be amazing! This pic is to show you how it looks behind the foam. I have an air pump hooked up to the PVC pipe and it pushes air/water up the pipe and circulates the whole tank. It is really cool how it works.

They are definitely cost effective and Jon made it super easy for me by providing the PVC and cutting the foam to size.

One question Jon, would it mess up the water circulation if I added an air stone to the tank?

no, I would put it at the other end.

Good. That's exactly where I put the stone. It just didn't seem like there was enough water circulation and I didn't want her to freak out when I put her in the tank.
They're doing fine. I just hate having filters hanging off the back of the tanks. I like the clean look that the inside the tank filter has... I will be switching all but my show tank to the inside the tank filters, I think.

You might need more air pressure going into the PVC. In that size tank, the water should ripple from one end to the other.

I will see about adding a larger air pump... that's probably the problem.

I'm not sure about the number of water changes needed yet. Maybe Jon could answer that question?

Water changes are the same. You still have the same number of nitrates, just a lot more surface area for bacteria to grow. If you think about a HOB for that size tank is 4-5" X 6-8" and less than 1" thick. The poret this way is the entire side of the tank(13" X 19" @ 2" thick) so the surface area between the 2 isn't even close. Plus this can also go in HOB filters and replace the carbon. So you should only have to get 1, and not replace every couple months.
It is also better than a traditional sponge because the pores allow water to move through easier with less maintenance.
