After I measured I think it is closer to 180 than 220, but no matter! My husband Denny and I met up with JD Sunday and got some SAs from him--5 true parrots (psittacus), pair of Severums, 1 chocolate cichlid, and 6 geophagus eartheaters. Looking forward to seeing all these guys grow! I have 2 nice pieces of driftwood to add, so the tankscape is still in progress. Here is the full flickr album: flic.kr/s/aHsjuWXYdV

NICE Alli and Denny. I know U all will enjoy watching this tank. And welcome to the club !!! Sooooo glad U all joined !!!
I do have a question about the tank though. I can tell the H2O is a little murky, and I see the white substrate. What is the white substrate made out of ? -- I have read it on here about folks talking re: living sand in their freshwater tank, and I am just not sure I understand that. Is this what is in your tank ?

They are doing great JD! A little shy but they are starting to beg a little when we come up to the tank.
Rick, it is pool filter sand. We rinsed it fairly well but I think it is going to be a little while before it starts clearing up. Hopefully a couple water changes will help.
We have 2 XP3s and and FX5 for filtration, but I am thinking about taking one of the XP3s off and adding another FX5...these guys are messy eaters!

Sweet! FX5 and XP3 for filtration? The FX5 is about the best filter we've had and we've had a bunch.

I had pool filter sand in my 125 for a while. No matter how much you rinse it, the tank still has that milky look for a while. With as much filtration as you have, and with a couple water changes it should go away in a couple days. Also have to be careful with scratching the glass with that sand. I made that mistake early on. One grain between a cleaning pad or mag float cleaner and the glass can do a lot of damage!

Thanks guys!
I don't want to add any more fish right now...but I'm wondering at some point, are there any dithers or catfish we could add that wouldn't get eaten? Maybe hi fin cories, or rainbowfish?

JD may be the one to chime in or check with but I like the Synodontis cats. They get (or you can buy) larger ones that would likely do fine.

Ha, I live in Huntsville. So I do live close! I have a group of 3 of the Eupturus in my Frontosa tank. What kind of cat is in your 2nd pic?

I don't really like the african cats in with SA fish. They tend to pester the fish at night and can be fairly aggressive. Plus they prefer different water conditions. Find yourself a good SA pleco. Some of the royal pleco's are good at cleaning up left over food and they look nice and won't bother your fish. As far as dithers there are several large SA tetras that work. There are lots of types of silver dollars. Some don't get real big and look nice. I really like the black bar silver dollars all though they are pricey.

I'll have to look into the tetras. I think the key is to get the thick bodied ones, right? So it discourages the bigger fish from having a snack.
BTW, JD, the Geos are already becoming territorial and pairing off. The ugly fake log I was going to take out is their favorite spot, go figure. But they are getting really nice color for their size.
