I have 15g tanks that I move holding female to. If I leave fry in a big tank, they usually get eaten. If all you have is parents in tank they can sometimes make it if there is plenty of cover. If you have a catfish in the tank, they will be food for sure.

oh great I do have a catfish ... one fry is probably 6 weeks at least. I noticed 5 baby fry that are about two weeks.
Next time when I notice a female holding I'll move her in time ... these ones I had no clue as I just got the tank 4 weeks ago with the fish included.

if you set up a holding tank make sure the fry has plenty of hiding places like horn wart or alot of rock piles

I dont need a bunch of babies. are you sure the father is german red also? if in a mixed tank with other males chances are low. unless you are sure i find is a best to just let them spit in the community tank and let nature run its course. if you are sure, put them in a breeder tank, raise them, then sell or trade them here. if you aren't sure, and you want to give it shot, you'll have to raise them until they are big enough to identify to make sure they are pure, which will take a while. if they aren't pure you should cull them. you have a little wiggle room with german reds as they are line bred so pure in the sense of that line is a relative term.

Well I am not 100%. The only thing that makes me think it was him is the way he colored up quickly and was acting around her. They would go in to the same holes and if she went in he was right behind her. I may try to grow them out a little...I was thinking keeping maybe 20 in my 55 and letting the rest become food.
