So, I have noticed black spots all over my cichlids lately. I thought it was due to high nitrates but I've had those under control for a few weeks now and they are not going away. My large Livingstoni is the worst, he has dark ones under his mouth and on his belly. Some of my other ones have them on their mouth and light ones all over their body. I'm hoping this isn't something that is irreversible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it is and how to get rid of it? Thanks!

They are not raised. Some of them I can barely see but they're all over. It just looks like ink if that makes sense.

I guess I should say the darker ones are under the mouth and underside of the belly. The lighter ones are on the sides of some of them. Like I said before it looks like a bunch of ink.

What are you feeding them? Are they under any new stress?

And one more thing--have you tested ammonia levels as well? How is the color around their gills? Fish colored or pink/red?

Well, I noticed the spots form when I added the new fish. They chase each other alot but I thought that's just what Cichlids do. lol I have one that's really mean. I feed them aquadine. Do you think it could be from stress?

How much spirulina is in the aquadine? I read that a diet heavy in spirulina can cause spotting. The other thing is stress. It sounds like they had a reason to stress, while re-establishing the pecking order, so that's likely it.

I'm not sure how much is in it... I need to go get some more in the next day or so and I will make sure I won't get as much spirulina. They have been in the tank together for about a month so they should be fine now but idk. Fish are weird and they like to stress me out with worrying HAHA! I'm so paranoid

Yes there is a parasite but parasites are raised. So she can likely rule that one out at least. I think the parasite is referred to as black ich sometimes too, isn't it? So it should be about that size?

I had this on my blood parrots originally. I believe it is water quality/stress related. Severums do it too. Getting the right mix of fish and lots of water changes should fix the issue with time.
