McAfee has automatically blocked and removed a Trojan.
About this Trojan Detected: Exploit-IFrame (Trojan) Location: C:\Users\AFP Command Central\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\NYT7SE34\notify[1].htm
I'm getting this message here every time Bizrate has a banner up at the top. Run virus protection, y'all. Nothing's safe.

Though I have IE8, not 5. Not sure if it's trying to put things in an old folder deliberately or it's McAfee reading things wrong. It's still a trojan.

I am pretty sure you are fine if you don't click on the ad, the way the google ads work is that they put banners on that relate to your searches I think. Mine always puts up stuff related to my last couple of searches.

Same here, which means we are all always being tracked. But even so, the others don't pop trojans. The ad from Bizrate has to be actually trying to give the trojan without clicking on it for mcafee to grab it. It wouldn't be cool to not say, since not everyone runs av all the time.

Run Firefox with Adblock plus...it will filter out banner ads on all sites. I never see ads.

That brings up an interesting point for business owners. If we pay google to put our banners on random sites, and a lot of folks use other browsers to filter them out, it's not effective advertising. Maybe other avenues are better for finding business.

Whether you have a PC or a Mac, keeping your system up to date and keeping your system secure is the most important thing. Most of it is common sense...block scripting if you can, don't run IE, scan for malware regularly, don't surf on open wifi networks. A lot of my work is in information security. That being said I live dangerously on my Mac and don't use antivirus...if malware/viruses become an issue for OS X I will switch to Ubuntu.

a common misconception is that mac os is more secure than windows. that is just false. all software has vulnerabilities because it is written by people. malware authors are simply going after whatever is the most popular to get the most results. as mac os continues to gain popularity the day will come when you never see an "i'm a mac, i'm a pc" commercial that flaunts the lack of viruses on the mac platform. it will be interesting to see how apple handles the inevitable attacks on their operating system that are most certainly coming.
on the browser front, IE suffers the same problem. it is the most attacked because it is the most popular. as other browsers start to gain popularity, we'll see more and more attacks targeted at them.
perhaps the most troublesome thing to worry about is adobe flash, which when vulnerabilities arise can infect all browsers and operating systems across the board.
and yes, allierw, you are right, it is all about being smart and keeping your system up to date.
