I am asking this because i have made about 60 bluegill really tame at my subdivision pond. I take pond pellets down with me when i walk the dog because i was told that they would not eat the food, they only would eat live food. Well they now follow me when i walk by the pond waiting for the fish food lol... I would love to have a few in a tank ,because bluegill have some really nice color and they seem to have cool temperments.
I will take a youtube vid of the fish today sometime if i get a chance to so you can see the huge group looking up at me from the water (i can almost touch them)
Would i be breaking a law keeping these? ,and has anyone done so? i don't want to kill them. I have taken temps of the pond water ,and it seems to be about 78F perfect !...
I really just want to play with them! lol is that bad? they seem to be small around 3-4" I am going to go tie some really small Flys with some Size 22 hooks to catch the small ones.

You might not like their "cool temperments" when you house them in a tank. They are very much like New Worlds Cichlids when the breeding starts. I would definitely house them by themselves due to possible disease. Made the mistake once of feeding a baby Redtail Cat some minnows from the bait shop!

You know, I was going to say I believe it's illegal in most places to net out natives and put them in your tank, but then you said you're going to catch them with a hook and line, and that has to be a different story. Do you have a fishing license? Is the pond deemed private? If either of these things are true, you can fish the pond legally and I can't imagine there's any law saying if you take a fish you have to kill it, so that would be your loophole. There may be a restriction on how many can be taken in one day, so read the fish and game laws in Alabama to be sure you're not over-limit. Bluegills are gorgeous.

Yeha i have a license because I love to fly fish for trout in cullman AL, I hate bass fishing though ,because i dont eat them. you brought up some good points I will be catchign them with a pole so that should be my way out of laws.

It's not illegal to keep them, but they need a cooler temp than tropicals. It's warm now but they tolerate the winter, too. You should build a pond and throw some in. They are very aggressive and messy, though. You would need a really big tank. We considered getting bass or sunfish (bream) for our pond, but I want butterfly koi.

Hum me and my son went down to the pond and cought well over 50 fish! lol it was like every cast. but after catching them I am not sure i would want them in my tanks ..lol Maybe a pond... Scary story though One of the last fish i cought i realed it in to about 1ft from the bank started lifting the fish out of the water AND BAM!!!! a huge Fish (maybe a bass around 10+ pounds) Snags the fish right out of the freaking AIR!!!! broke my line and i guess ate the fish lol... i was only using 2Lb tess or else that bad boy would have been mine! It really scared the crap out of me ,and my son just stood there with his mouth open! "Dad was that a shark?" Here is a pic of one of the fish we cought. not very impressive...

I've only ever used 6 or 8 lb test but always went to catch bass and that's why. I LOVE bass fishing! There's not much more exciting than a bass blowing up on a bait or jumping clear out of the water. And I don't like the taste of trout--but bass is milder so I have liked it. I haven't fished since moving to TN though. Dennis doesn't like to fish. Bummer.
