Need some suggestions here. I have a female that will be spitting here probably within the next week or so. I am going to let her spit since this is her first time holding, but how long should I keep the fry in the tank? I have a 10gal cycled and ready for fry right now and want to move them there since I would like to grow the fry out and would like to use them to sell/trade later on.

Go ahead and move the female there. Once she spits, remove her and put her back in the main tank.

Whats the best way of doing that. From what I have read if she gets out of water she will spit.

I had a few Tangs that would do that, but my Mbuna never did. Chances are if she does spit, she will pick them back up if you leave her alone. Once you catch her in the net, you could always scoop her up into a cup so that she never technically leaves water, but I don't think it's really necessary. Catching her is the hardest part, especially if you have a big, well rocked tank...

Maybe snag her after the lights have been off for a few hours. get her as she sleep, that is if she does not sleep under a cave! If you get her to worked up she could spit or swallow some fry.

Congrats! When my blue peacocks were breeding, the first couple mouthfuls were lost to the tank... I don't know whether Big Blue (the daddy) or Evil Witch (the dominant leleupi) were the culprits... Then I made a nursery out of a kritter-keeper with a bunch of holes drilled in it. Netted Mama Blue into the nursery, and she started spitting, a bajillion little fry, at least 30. Next morning? Nothing. I suspect the holes were too big, and the fry were too dumb to stay in the nursery. When she had another mouthful approaching maturity, rather than move her I just put Big Blue and both leleupi in Jail :halo: . Moved the predators out of the 80gallon, leaving just Mama Blue and her brood of Baby Blues chillin' with the Multies. Ended up moving before growing all the babies to adulthood, gave a bunch to a friend, and turned the rest of my fish in at a LFS that I liked (and then gave the credit slip to that same friend). The multies and leleupi had already made one move with me, but that was just cross-town, and this one was cross-country!
