I just got 2 120v UPS today......for free......and was going to do some fish tank rearranging today, but wanted to know if there is anything I should know first. I have never used one. Can I plug power strips into them?

Yes, but the more you plug in the less time it will stay on during an outage. Usually they have 6-8 plugs, don't they? I think ours have 6. Honestly I wouldn't put them on the fish tanks, I'd put them on your electronics that are vulnerable to a power surge.

Wouldnt I want them for power outages for the tanks though. Were im at now ive heard we have frequent severe thunderstorms and tornados. I know the fish can handle a power outage for a few days since ive been through it before but wouldnt it be best to have the tanks running as long as possible during an outage?

A UPS is only going to last about 30 minutes and it is going to beep the whole time. The more you have running, the quicker it will die, too. If our TV is plugged in our UPS only lasts about 10 minutes. It's mostly designed to protect electronics from surges and to allow you to safely shut down equipment without damage. The fish can handle an outage as long as you don't feed them.

YES... you heard correct! Clarksville always gets hit with the nasty stuff. I am originally from Murfreesboro and it is amazing how much worse the weather is in Clarksville than in Murfreesboro (and it's only 1.5 hour drive difference). I don't blame you for wanting to get something to protect your tanks. I still need to get something for mine as well.

As this thread is all about discussing electric, it brings to mind the question; what do any of you have for back up heat for your tanks, or fish room, in the event of the possible power failure?

I will be getting a generator in the fall, if something happens before then I will be blowing in a bunch of airline tubing.
