What are some options for a long term setup for this size tank. First time keeping tangs. I really like calvus but not sure if those would work long term. Any help appreciated.

Calvus are nice just really slow growing, and they seem to hide alot, so you might want to get something else with them that stay out in the opened. I would recomend keeping tangs with othere tangs not Mals.
Calvus go good with other shellies, occies, multies, Frontosa, they are fry hunters though so they might eat small fry as they get older.

A generally accepted mix for a 29gallon that is likely to succeed would be a lamprologine shell-dweller (probably not a lepidolamp) and a smaller relatively mild substrate spawner, like one of the smaller julidichromis species. Calvus would probably work for a number of years, but I would eventually expect the calvus to outgrow that tank.
My 29g will have multies and Julies, probably either transcriptus or marlieri "gombe" (a much smaller-than-average flavor of marlieri).

I have some not sure how far you live from AL, no clue where ft campbell is. I have a few colonies of these ,mine breed like crazy they only have about 3-5 fry each spawn but the spawn alot and are still young. they are very cool fish! I love to watch them dig out the homes.
Also next week i should have alot of new fish coming in after the holliday. ;D

Sweet. Sounds like your set -- I neglected to mention species tank options, a 29g would make a nice little brichardi tank among others.
