That looks like some type of peacock hap hybrid. When you say local pet shop, a lot of them get their fish from sunpets in atlanta. They have a mixed cichlid they sell for next to nothing. Some in these batches may or may not be pure strains. If it was labeled as an electric blue, it is probably an electric blue peacock mix. If the pet store couldn't tell that wasn't an electric blue, they don't have a clue about african cichlids, because that is about as bread and butter as you get.

I would say its not Ahli Hap at all, maybe borleyi mix with something? the Ahlis face is longer with a smaller, longer forhead. that face looks like a hap borleyi more short faced and the blue looks the same also. If it was a Hap Ahli I would think it would show more blue in the body.

Once you cross a peacock and a hap, you cant really tell what it is. Lithobates have spots, copadiochromis have spots, so if it has spots on it when it is not colored up, it could be either of those.
If it has stripes when not colored up it is something else. possiblities are endless until it colors up some more.

The hap you posted resemble him a bit, but where it has white on the dorsal mine is orange. This is not my pic but resembles mine a great deal The stripe on mine stops as his eyes though where this one goes to his lips. First of his kind I have had though so not sure if that is maybe common. Mine is orange where this one is though, just more washed out than this one. I am leaning towards hybrid as well. If for no other reason, I can't find anything online just like him. there are white and red toped borly, but like Jon said when you mix them no telling what will happen. only thing about that fish i feel confident about is that it is not a Hap Ahli at all because the bone structure is not right. i mentioned ahli because of the first pic where it looks more elongated and the pronounced vertical bands. the blaze also looks white, not yellow like a lithobates but it is hard to tell from the colors. the second pic seems more borleyi shaped but i've never really noticed much banding in borleyi nor have i ever seen one with a blaze. also remember that the ahli they sell at petsmart are well known to actually be peacock x ahli hybrids.
i have adult male z rock lithobates (aka aristo yellow blaze), red fin borleyi, blue ahlis, and f1 iceberg blue ahlis. it honestly resembles a peacock more than any of those to me.
it is just impossible to say. these guessing games are always fun, but they are just that, guessing games. i've never seen a pure species with that coloration or shape though, so it is a most likely a hybrid of some sort.
