I remember reading somewhere that you guys use Chloram-X and it's cheaper than AmQuel but basically the same thing. Am I right?
Where can I find this stuff? Where do you guys buy it? I'd like to buy a large bucket of it.

Jess, have not researched the name of the product you mention above. But,...the ingredient in de-clor that disapates clorine is a salt called Sodium Thiosulfate, and it is avail in bulk. I then mix my own de-clor. I will provide the source and mix ratio/instructions, if this is the route you are searching for.

I use Pond Prime, which is just a really concentrate version of regular prime. I think one capful treats something like 400 gallons, so you literally just use a few drops on most tanks. It's only $40/gallon, same as regular Prime.

I use Sodium Thiosulfate also. I make a mix with distilled water so its easier to measure than using straight crystals. but 1 drop treats 20 gallons.

I mix mine with distilled gallons of h20 from Walmart as well. A pharmisist @ the hospital I work for helped me figure the concentration I needed to create a solution that would dilute chlorine by adding 1cc or 1ml per gallon of chlorinated h20. I mix 90 dry cc's or ml's to 1 gallon of distilled h20, then use at 1cc or ml per gallon to disapate chlorine. I use a large syringe to measure the correct amt. straight into the tank when refilling after water changes. It works immediately. All I have to do is make sure the water going in is @ the same temp..
I buy the salt cystals, sodium thiosulfate, in bulk and can choose from 1 lb. 2lb., 5 lb., and 50 lb. FYI...50 lbs. would last a lifetime ! I use about 2 lbs. per year and it's cheap. $5 per 2 lbs. Then the cost of the distilled h20 which is < $1 per gallon. Rather cheap if you ask me. And it works.
Of course I have wondered why I have some live plant deaths, and have thought it might be contributed to the use of this salt, but the ferts often used are derived from salts, so I think I am just missing something in the water in Franklin, that is just not condusive to stem and floating plants. Crown plants grow just fine. Still a plant mystery for me. Ideas anyone ?

I use chloram-X and 5lbs last me a year. Now that I have one tank it might last the rest of my life. I add one tablespoon per water change. I use tap water and a little epsom salt and marine salt at my house. 1 tbls of each salt per 5-10 gallons. Sometimes I add a tsp of baking soda if pH is low.

Good stuff Jon... thanks for sharing! Where do you get the 5lb Chloram-X? I was going to order from Amazon but not sure about shipping costs.
