Suggestions transferred from another thread for good ways to use a D-SLR camera and a DIY external flash.
------------------------------------------------------------
a recommendation - try without the flash. use the lowest f stop you can, with your lens I'm assuming f2.8 or f3.5. set shutter about 1/250. use the highest ISO possible. move the lights to the front of the tank and only shoot when the fish are under the lights. i fake mine out like i am going to feed them then rush back to snap pics.
just something to try. I'm not a fan of the built in flash even when taken at an angle.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The flashbox is a piece of gutter from home depot with 2 ends. Then you cut out a spot for 2 light fixture switches and add plug. You then get to slave bulbs and put them in turn power on and shoot.
Just type slave bulb, or slave flash into amazon and they will come up. Brand doesn't matter, they run about $20.

The DIY flash needs a remote to get flash to work properly. I used the cheap one I had at the swap for a few months, but it won't work right anymore, and I have seen where it has screwed some expensive cameras and flashes up. I am lookiing for another alternative that isn't $500 from Nikon, but isn't cheap china crap that will blow my Nikon flash up.
