So I got about 5 pounds of java moss today in a trade but it is full of snails. I have been rinsing it in a 5 gallon bucket trying to crush the boogers but I am sure there are still tons left. If anyone has some helpful tips that would be great. Thanks, Scott

Plus I have red rams horn snails in the tanks I want to put the moss in. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

YES THEY SHIP IT IN A BAG INSIDE A BOX WITH NO LITE FOR 3 DAYS. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET A LITE ON IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN. SOME TIMES YOU HAVE TO USE SNAIL RID TWICE TO KILL BOTH THE SNAILS AND THEN THE EGGS AFTER THEY HATCH

Assassin snails work but over time. They have really cut my population of MTS down, and pond snails, and ignore the ramshorns for the most part.

Saltwater and peroxide dips are pretty effective. Puffers/loaches work great too. You could try making a concentrated solution of Ich Treatment that has copper in it; that would kill any invertebrate in your moss.

Actually I did do the ich treatment to my 5 gallon bucket with moss in it, as I didn't have time to get anything else. Glad to know I wasn't too crazy to doing that. Not sure how effective it was though. I will probably just have to save out the snails I want and get a loach to rid the rest.

be careful with "had-a-snail" or any other high copper treatment with plants.. some plants will succumb to the high copper and melt( become mush)- though java moss, specifically, is pretty stable under high copper treatment

Just out of curiosity. What are some of the disadvantages of leaving the snails in?

Not too much if you have cichlids that will eat them. I am putting it in fry tanks and such so the snails will breed out of control and you will have to pick them out. I have had tanks will so many snails that they start to breed inside a canister filter and that becomes a pain when they get into the small parts and lock up the motor.
