Tonight when i got home from work i had a few dead Cyps in my 125g. I took them out, did a water change and treated the water i just lost several hundred dollars of in my tangs. Itested the water right when i noticed the fish acting funny and the readings were off the chart. So im really thinking about giving this up. I dont have several hundred dollars just sitting around to go buy new fish. I didnt even get a notice saying they were doing anything to the water this time. Im done

Hey man, I know your pain. Every one in this hobby goes through something similar or far worse. about 2 years ago I had to work out of town for a week while my mom house sat. I gave instructions, covered all bases, left no stone unturned or so I had thought. needless to say I can home to a tank with about 20 dead cichlids I had been growing out for years. I was crushed. I didn't have the money to replace them. none of my friends had fish at the time and I was a mess about it. Needless to say time went on, I became older and wiser and I fully recovered. I bounced back better and stronger with fish I love just as much. Don't give up man. Hang in there.

that sucks Man! What readings did you take that were off the chart? Was it a cycling issue?
if I were you, I would sleep on that decision. Take a deep breath and come back to it tomorrow and decide with a clear head what you want to do. Figure out what happened and if it could be preventable, or if it was random bad luck. Never decide anything when you are angry.
keep us posted and I hope that you can salvage the rest of your stock!

I called the water company and they said they sent out a letter stating they were going to be treating the water with some kind of bacteria or something. Needless to say i never got the letter.
Death Count 10 Cyp Blue Orchids 4 Juli Malieri 1 Kendalli 2 Callochromis Stapressi 2 Neolamp Speciosus
Well im def going to be posting all that stuff i posted for sale here on CL tomorrow. If i decide to stay in the hobby im going to need to fill this damn 125 again. As of right now, since im pissed, i want to sell everything.
The only good news is my wild caught white calvus, f1 white calvus and my wild caughy gobies are looking decent right now. I moved everything that was still alive to another tank. Some of them may be dead here soon, but who knows.

No way, Brian. You're not beat. Take a deep breath. We'll help you figure out what to do. You provided the fish that got me started and you've been a huge encouragement to others on here, too. Think it over for awhile before you make a decision.

I'm really sorry to hear that you lost so many beautiful fish that you put so much into. But obviously you love the hobby, so I hope you don't decide to let some idiot at the water company keep you from something that gives you satisfaction and enjoyment. IMO, there aren't enough of those types of things around. Give it some time and see how you feel.

These guys are right Brian...take a couple days and rejuvenate. I've lost way more fish than I even own right now, and for a variety of reasons. Many my fault, many due to factors out of my control like this. I've seen my favorites go...Frontosas, my favorite geophagus, discus and countless cichlids. It's all part of it. If you sell everything, in six days, six weeks, or six months, you'll want to get back into it stronger than ever and then you'll be replacing EVERYTHING instead of the fish and you'll wish you only had to spend money on livestock instead of all that gear. You might consider a filter for your tap water. A friend of mine has this one and loves it. Expensive yes, but cheaper than a tank of fish over and over. Plus, if you ever decided to do salt/reef, you'd be ready to go and wouldn't have to worry about buying RO/DI water. www.petsolutions.com/C/Aquarium-RO-Water-Purification/I/Kold-Ster-Il-3-Stage-Filtration-System.aspxHope you get to feeling better. I know the sick feeling you have, it's no fun, but hang in there. That filter also wastes no water (unlike many other RO units that waste say 4 gallons for every one good gallon) so you get to use all your water. Better for drinking too!

Brian, I have been a hobbyist fior 48 years now. Almost my entire life. When I was about 12 or 13 I had the practice of naming all my fish. I lost a tank full and don't even remember why now @ that time. I remember being teary eyed and being made fun of @ school that day. I wanted to quit then. I didn't. I started again. ( I don't name fish anymore, LOL ). Since then there have been many losses for many diferent reasons. Some 20 years ago I could not keep wiggler Angel fry alive. I lost literally millions of fry until I learned my mistakes and beat the challenge. ( now I have raised umpteen millions of them) I lost a full tank of breeder Koi Angels last summer while on vacation. A filter stopped working while we were gone. 18 adult breeders all dead and smelly when we got home from vacation. Then there was the summer some 5 years ago when I was making water changes in like August. Our water company had doubled the chlorine to combat algae during a dry summer. They told no one, since clorine didn't hurt humans. I didn't add double the de-clor. I ran some errands after the water changes that day. Came home the same day to find several tanks of gasping and dieing fish. I lost hundreds of fish that day. Currently I keep killing certain live plants. I can't keep some of them alive. I have spent a fair amt. of money and am frustrated with myself cause I have not been able to meet this challenge yet. I met with 2 of our fellow forum/club hobbyists this week in their homes to discuss plants and other topics. I am still trying to achieve success. I have developed a plan over the next few weeks to months to re-attempt. Frustration and failure can be good if one looks at it as a challenge and thinks positively to learn from ones mistakes and overcome. You could even say this applies to our jobs/careers and to our kids and our marriages. One must overcome and move foreward to find success. We are all friends and there is support here among your fellow hobbyists. Now is not the time to give up. Now is the time to dig in your heels and trudge towards a new adventure. You gotta be a guy with your glass half full, not half empty. I know, easy to say, but you gotta psych. yourself up to this ideal.

Like Rick says, I think we all have periods in our hobbies where we'll get discouraged. After amazing success with fish I got from you, Glen, and James, I was riding high until two weeks ago. I lost $155 worth of angels and discuses in a little over one week, plus I killed $35 worth of plants while trying to cure the sick fish! I have gone through the same discouragement with photography, old motorcycles, old cars, etc.
You love fish and you're good with them, so hang in there. There are always guys giving away fish to other members. Get some of them and build up some trading stock again.

Man that sucks! I know exactly how you feel! When my parents came to my new house for the holidays their reaction was "Man you're low on fish". Well that comment was because of so many I lost during our move. Hang in there! We've got your back. Just take a deep breath. It's obvious that you've touched a lot of people on here and I think it's awesome how many responses you've received.

Well thank you everyone for your support. This morning i feel a little better. I lost one more fish over night, but have decided to cut down on the species in my 125g tang tank and get large numbers of maybe 3 species and maybe try some plants. Other then the water filter is there anything else a little cheaper i can t Try incase this happened again? I called the water company again this morning and they said it was extra chlorine and not bacteria. Should i just double my Prime every water change? Also im going to Bump what i have for sale if anyone knows anyone who may be interested please let me know. Thank you again
