So my 29g has been running with little change for the past year, and I've decided that it needs something new.
Currently: 1 Angelfish, 3 platys, 3 siamese algae eaters, an otocinclus, and some amano shrimp that I got from George that disappear for months at a time, but show up randomly in herds, grazing happily.
I have a java fern, and an amazon sword plant that have survived for 2 years, though just barely.
Marineland biowheel penguin 200, and temp stays around 78 (wish my heater had ability to go lower)
White gravel
hard water
2x GE daylight F20 24" 6500k bulbs on top of glass canopy for 12 hours a day.
I'd like something completely new, So I turn to you all and ask for suggestions on how I can make my tank interesting.
I love the idea of a planted tank, though I haven't had much luck with the plants I've acquired in the past. I can't see myself spending over $100 for some of the HO light fixtures on the market, but I'm totally cool with setting some clamp-on lights with CFL bulbs from Lowes on top of my tank (though I'd prefer something a bit more easy on the eyes, like a DIY fixture from a rain gutter, or wooden tank top/canopy). Advice on how much light to use on a tank is much needed (and done cheaply).
I'm not opposed to a complete overhaul of the tank, and I'm open to the ideas of going with a rockscape tank, open water with specific fish species in mind, or even rehoming my fish for a short time to lay down a new substrate for an amazing planted tank.
I look forward to hearing your ideas, and will answer questions as they come.
