I am planning on getting a generator to back up the tanks. I have four 300 watt heaters and three pumps. How do I find out what size generator I need. Am I right in assuming that the heaters don't convert to 300 watts in generator size.

I'm not an electrician by trade, although we all have the limited knowledge of calling ourselves carpenters, plumbers, electricians, plant botinists, and fish breeders. I believe you have to figure up the amps your devices use and compare to the total amps the generator puts out. Remember that when items first turn on they often use more amps than when running, so read each device for total amps required. Another here, with more experience than I, can feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I have been told this in the past, although I have no back up generator of my own and claim to be no expert on this subject. I have back up gas heat, to my normal electric heat, but no back up electricity.
